1. Yes. your pet gets experience from fighting with you. you pet will even get experience when dead, and can also get experience when you wouldn;t normally.

ie your level 20, pet is level 10 and fight a level 10 creature. You will get 0 xp, while your pet will get 100 xp.

Your pet will likely be getting more experience per critter killed that byou are if it's of lower level, thus will level up faster than you.

2. There are ways of making your pet higher level than you, but I don't know how to do that. Also, they max at level 20 which is also the players max level.

3. Can't answer that one myself, sorry.

1. Pets level up just like you do, but according to THEIR level. So if you're fighting high level monsters and your pet is still low level, he will level up rather quickly (just as fast as you would if you were at that level).

2. Nope. Level 20 is the max.
EDIT: I think I misread your question, so let me clarify. Lvl 20 is the max, just like you. As for whether or not your pet can at some point have a higher level than you, I believe that he can, if you charm a pet who starts off with a higher level than yourself. But it'll level out naturally rather quickly (due to the higher EXP than your pet that you'll get per kill). But he'll never PASS you, if that's what you mean.

3. Typically, no. Unless you're trying to create a beast master build who specializes in beast mastery. But if you want to focus on other things (like marksmanship), as most rangers do, then it's best to leave the pet behind when you get further into the game.
It's good to keep him around early on though, because he makes for a good distraction/tank. But when you start fighting lvl 20 monsters, you'll need those skill slots for more important skills.

I heard bringing charm animal along for your pet can help out, I heard they can become good tanks?

Charm Animal charms the animal and keeps him with you, nothing more. So basically you're using up a skill slot just to keep the animal charmed, and you also need to use a slot for Comfort Animal to heal/resurrect him, so were're talking a minimum of 2 slots. But if you want to be an effective beast master, you'll need to use at least one more slot (if not more) on an attack skill for your pet.

So again, the minimum number of slots you'll need is two, which if okay early on in the game, but it's just not worth it later on when you're fighting level 20 monsters in parties.

Also, your pet won't be doing max damage unless you max out your beast mastery attribute, because the damage he does is tied into YOUR level in said attribute, not his own level. Only his HP and armor is determined by his own level.
So it's pretty much all or nothing when it comes to having a pet. Either go all out and become a beast master, or just drop the pet altogether once you are able to fill up your skill bar with other skills.

Charm Animal is neccessary for the pet to come along at all.

If you want to do a beastmaster build you at minimum need: Charm Animal, Comfort Animal, and Call of Protection.

Call of Protection will make your pet a very nice tank. 80 AL and 10+ absorbtion is a very nice duo for keeping the pet alive. Comfort Animal works as both a heal spell for the pet and a rez spell for if it actually dies. The worst thing that happens with most people who bring pets is that they leave behind Comfort Animal (or Revive Animal, which can also work). Their pet dies and for the rest of the instance they have at least one skill slot that might as well be empty. The only time I can justify not bringing a pet rez is in the Random Arenas.

Of course, if you want your pet to be useful at all, you probably want at least one pet attack (though more is likely) and thus it becomes apparent that a beastmaster build is very much a build. You don't just bring the pet along and hope it'll be useful, you have to spend a lot of skills to make it so. Most people would rather bring other skills than the pet-related skills, but I'll leave that choice to you.

I, personally, enjoy my beastmastery build more than any of the other ranger builds I've played with.

EDIT: Darn! Beaten to the punch! ...I would disagree with the above poster than a min of 3 skills are required to pull beastmastery. I'd put it at 4 or 5, which just strengthes the point we share: beastmastery really will be your whole build if you choose to use it effectively.

Yup, all BM skills to be effective. You can bring apply poison or distracting shot also. Things where it's not the damage from the bow you're concerned about.

With the right mask you can get BM at 12 and still get 8 or 9 in expertise, wilderness survival and 1 other category for your weapon of choice be it bow or secondary in which case you can use one of those skills.
